Smoky Mountain Dream is a five bedroom luxury log cabin in Waynesville, North Carolina, ten minutes from Cataloochee Ski Area by the back road. It sleeps ten, has four queen bedrooms and a kids bunk room, and the road is paved all the way to the driveway.
That last part matters more than anything else on this page. Plenty of cabins near a ski area in these mountains sit at the end of a gravel switchback that gets interesting in January. Ours does not. You can reach us in a rental sedan, in any season, and guests tell us so every year.
Cataloochee runs one of the longer seasons in the southeast, and the mountain is 44% beginner terrain, which makes it one of the better places in the region to put a family on skis for the first time. We are close enough that you can ski a four hour morning session and be back at the cabin for lunch.

Where should you stay near Cataloochee Ski Area?
Most people skiing Cataloochee stay in Maggie Valley or Waynesville, and the practical difference is the drive up the mountain, not the mileage.
Cataloochee sits at 4,660 feet at the base and 5,400 feet at the summit. Everything around it is a climb. What separates a good winter base from a bad one is not how many miles you are from the lift, it is what the last two miles of road look like when it is 28 degrees.

How far is Cataloochee Ski Area from Waynesville?
Ten minutes from our driveway by the back road, and around twenty to twenty five minutes from downtown Waynesville depending on where you start.
Google measures properties on our road at 0.7 to 0.8 miles from the ski area in a straight line. The drive is longer than that, because the road goes around the ridge rather than over it, but it is short and it is paved.
Do you need four wheel drive to reach a cabin near Cataloochee?
Not to reach us. You do sometimes need it to reach other cabins in this area, which is the whole reason this question gets asked.
The road to our driveway is paved end to end and stays passable in a normal car through the season. The ski area’s own access road is maintained. What catches people out is the last stretch of private gravel drive at a property that looked fine in the summer photos.
Ask any cabin you are considering this exact question: is the road paved all the way to the driveway? If the answer is anything other than a clear yes, plan accordingly.

Are there ski-in, ski-out cabins at Cataloochee?
No. Cataloochee has no true ski-in, ski-out lodging. Any listing using that phrase is describing a short drive, not a walk to the lift.
Ten minutes by the back road is about as close as a real cabin gets, and it is close enough that going back mid afternoon for a nap or a forgotten glove costs you nothing.
How much are lift tickets at Cataloochee Ski Area?
Adult all day tickets run $116 on holidays and weekends and $76 on weekdays for the 2026-27 season. Youth ages 5 to 12 are $93 and $66.

The weekday saving is the reason to book a midweek stay. A family of four skiing two weekdays rather than two weekend days saves roughly $300 on tickets alone, which is most of a night’s lodging.

When does Cataloochee Ski Area open and close?
Typically early November into late March, with the exact dates set by the weather each year. Recent seasons have run anywhere from about 90 to 149 days.
The mountain relies primarily on snowmaking rather than natural snowfall, and has 100% coverage. In practice that means the season depends on cold nights rather than storms, which makes it more reliable than the forecast suggests.
Every slope is lit, and in peak season the mountain runs until 10pm. Coming off a lit slope at ten and being in front of your own fireplace by quarter past is a different evening than a forty minute drive. Check Cataloochee’s hours page before you lock in dates.
Is Cataloochee good for beginners and kids?
Yes, and the terrain breakdown is the reason: 44% beginner, 39% intermediate, 17% expert across 18 slopes, served by a triple chair, two quads and conveyor carpets for first timers.
That mix is unusual. Most resorts push beginners onto one or two runs. Cataloochee gives them nearly half the mountain, which means a first timer is not stuck in a corner while everyone else skis. The longest run, Upper and Lower Snowbird, is 3,500 feet, and the vertical drop is 740 feet across 50 skiable acres.

Are there pet-friendly cabins near Cataloochee Ski Area?
Ours is. Dogs and cats are welcome with approval, up to two, with no weight limit, at a non refundable $100 per pet per stay.
Pet friendly winter rentals in this area are less common than summer ones, largely because owners worry about mud and wet floors. We have hardwood, an entry that handles boots, and over an acre of our own land for a dog to work off a day of being left alone while you ski.
What else is there to do near Cataloochee in winter?
Snow tubing, downtown Waynesville, and the Blue Ridge Parkway overlooks on a clear cold day.
- Tube World, at 4721 Soco Road in Maggie Valley, runs tubing sessions of one hour forty five minutes. There is a 42 inch height minimum and a separate Wee Bowl area for smaller children. It is a winter only operation, so confirm this season’s dates before you build a day around it.
- Downtown Waynesville, fifteen minutes away, stays open through winter, which is not true of every mountain town around here. See our local guide.
